Le Lion d’or 2021 a couronné L’Événement de la Française Audrey Diwan, adapté du roman homonyme d’Annie Ernaux. Dans la France de 1963, il est question d’une jeune femme qui décide d’avorter afin de finir ses études et échapper au destin de sa famille pauvre. "Malheureusement, dira la cinéaste en recevant son prix, quand vous travaillez sur l’avortement vous êtes toujours dans l’actualité."
La Néo-Zélandaise Jane Campion a obtenu le Prix de la meilleure réalisation pour The Power of the Dog (Le Pouvoir du chien) et l’Italien Paolo Sorrentino, le Grand Prix pour È stata la mano di Dio (La Main de Dieu).
La réalisatrice Maggie Gyllenhaal est repartie avec le Prix du meilleur scénario pour The Lost Daughter.

Lauréat de la Palme d’or au Festival de Cannes 2019, puis de quatre Oscars, pour Parasite, le cinéaste sud-coréen Bong Joon-ho présidait le jury de la compétition reine.

Madres paralelas (Parallel Mothers), le nouveau film de Pedro Almodóvar avec Penelope Cruz, a ouvert la Mostra de Venise, le 1er septembre. Le film y était présenté en première mondiale, en compétition.

Lion d’or de la Mostra 2020 avec Nomadland, avant d’être couronnée de trois Oscars, Chloé Zhao (Etats-Unis) était de retour à Venise comme membre du jury de la compétition 2021. Le jury comprenait en outre l’actrice française d’origine belge Virginie Efira, à l’affiche de Benedetta de Paul Verhoeven, la Britannique Cynthia Erivo, qui interprète Aretha Franklin dans la troisième saison de la série "Genius", l’actrice et productrice canadienne Sarah Gadon, les réalisateurs italien Saverio Costanzo et roumain Alexander Nanau, dont le documentaire Colectiv (Collective), sélectionné à Venise en 2019, a été nommé aux Oscars.

La Sélection officielle comprenait 21 films en compétition, dont cinq réalisés par des femmes : The Power of the Dog de la Néo-Zélandaise Jane Campion, Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon de l’Irano-Américaine Ana Lily Amirpour, L’Évènement de la Française Audrey Diwan, Captain Volkonogov Escaped de la Russe Natasha Merkulova (co-réal. avec Aleksei Chupov) et The Lost Daughter, un premier long métrage de l’actrice et productrice américaine Maggie Gyllenhaal.
En compétition avec The Power of the Dog, un drame familial dans le Montana des années 1920, adapté d’un livre de Don Winslow, Jane Campion était de retour à Venise où An Angel at My Table avait obtenu le Grand Prix du jury en 1990, trois ans avant la Palme d’or de Cannes pour The Piano.

Parmi les films en lice pour le Lion d’or 2021, les cinémas italien (5 films), américains (3 films), français (3 films) et espagnol (2 films) se taillaient la part belle. Il fallait noter la sélection de The Card Counter, un thriller de Paul Schrader, Spencer de Pablo Larrain avec Kristen Spencer dans le rôle de Lady Diana ou encore È stata la mano di Dio (The Hand of God) de Paolo Sorrentino.

Avec The Power of the Dog de Jane Campion, The Hand of God de Paolo Sorrentino était l’un des deux films Netflix en compétition à Venise cette année.

Hors compétition, le public de la Mostra a découvert Dune de Denis Villeneuve, le très attendu film de science-fiction à gros budget, d’après le célèbre roman de Frank Herbert, The Last Duel de Ridley Scott ou encore Last Night in Soho d’Edgar Wright. On pouvait également y voir Becoming Led Zeppelin de Bernard Mac Mahon qui revient sur la carrière de ce groupe rock majeur des années 1970, emmené par son chanteur Robert Plant et son guitariste Jimmy Page.

C’est la cinéaste bosnienne Jasmila Žbanić (Sarajevo mon amour [2006], Ours d’or à Berlin, Quo vadis, Aida ? [2020], en compétition à Venise) qui présidait le jury de la section Orrizonti.

L’actrice américaine Jamie Lee Curtis (Un fauteuil pour deux de John Landis (1983), Un poisson nommé Wanda de Charles Crichton, 1988) et l’acteur et réalisateur italien Roberto Benigni, lauréat du Grand Prix du Festival de Cannes 1998 et de trois Oscars pour La vie est belle, ont été récompensés d’un Lion d’or pour l’ensemble de leurs carrières.
